Tropical Wholefoods ~ Organic Fair Trade Apricot Kernels
Apricot Kernels ~ Frequently Asked Questions

What are apricot kernels?
Apricot kernels come from the seed of the apricot fruit.

What kinds of apricot kernels are available?
There are two types of apricot kernels available; bitter and sweet.

Why are people attracted to apricot kernels?
Apricot kernels are, like most nuts and seeds, very nutritious.
Among the nutrients they contain is one called amygdalin, which is also known as Vitamin B17.

In the 1970s and 1980s, amygdalin (Vitamin B17 or laetrile) was extracted from bitter apricot kernels and sold as a treatment for cancer. Whilst much research has been, and continues to be conducted in this area, concerns were raised amongst officials regarding toxicity levels and as such the sale of bitter apricot kernels became restricted.

What kind of apricot kernels are Tropical Wholefoods' apricot kernels?
Tropical Wholefoods supply sweet apricot kernels. Small amounts of amygdalin are still present in sweet apricot kernels as they are in almonds and the stones of other members of the genus prunus family.

Where do Tropical Wholefoods source their apricot kernels from?
Tropical Wholefoods source their sweet apricot kernels (along with dried apricots) from their partners in the Hunza Valley, Pakistan. All Tropical Wholefoods apricot kernels are certified organic and fair trade thus providing a significant income and sustainable model for approximately 600 family groups.

Again, much research has been done on the Hunza tribes and communities. The Hunzas are world renowned for being some of the healthiest people in the world. As apricot kernels form a staple part of their diet (eaten fresh in summer and dried in winter) questions have been raised as to the contribution apricot kernels makes to their health and longevity.

How can I include apricot kernels in my diet?
Sweet apricot kernels do not have the overpowering bitter taste associated with bitter apricot kernels therefore they can be eaten on their own as a snack. Alternatively, they make a great addition to muesli or when mixed with honey or yoghurt or they can be blended into your favourite smoothie.

Is there a limit on the number of sweet apricot kernels I should eat in a day?
Tropical Wholefoods recommend that no more than 350g of their sweet apricot kernels are consumed in the one day. This is a recommendation for sweet NOT bitter apricot kernels.

If you are looking for organic certified apricot kernels you will be hard pressed to find any grown in Australia. Our apricot kernels are not Australian grown but they are chemical free, organic and fair trade certified from the Hunza Valley - a region that is reknown for the long life spans and health of it's people.

The consumption information provided is for Tropial Wholefoods sweet apricot kernels only and should not be taken as advice when consuming other brands of apricot kernels.

Please Note:
If your intention in the consumption of our apricot kernels is for reasons other then eating healthy nuts we recommend that you consult a certified health practitioner. Preferrably one that offers complementary medicines as they can provide you with a natural diet as an alternative to/or a diet that compliments western medicine for your specific needs.
