Percol is so different to other coffees. They don't source their beans from large commercial estates; instead they search out small plantations in different regions of Central and South America, often run by the indigenous population and benefiting from natural soil enrichment and microclimates that allow the coffee to develop its full, natural character. Where possible Percol choose Fairtrade coffee beans and buy from organic growers who carefully hand pick the red cherries just when they are ripe and perfect for harvesting.
Like wine, coffee oxidises so they use sophisticated processing methods from roasting to packing to ensure that the beans do not come into contact with oxygen. Little wonder then, that Percol produces some of the best tasting coffees you can buy. The experts think so too; since 2002 Percol's Ground and Instant Coffees have won 36 industry awards.
Good for Life is Percol's initiative to support their aims. They start by sourcing Fairtrade certified coffee where possible and through their various charitable projects, such as the Coffee Kids charity (which they have been supporting for over 10 years) and Children in Africa, they help support mothers and children through healthcare, education and microcredit schemes.
Percol want to give something back to the people and communities who dedicate their lives to making the great coffee we enjoy possible.
Percol was one of the founders of the UK Fairtrade movement. The Fairtrade Mark is more than a symbol of hope for farmers in the developing world - it shows the commitment to paying coffee growers in particular a fair and proper price for their hard won crops.
Many of Percol lines are organically grown. Crops grown organically help maintain the health of the soils, thus make it a very sustainable method of farming. The certification also means the general health of the surrounding environment is maintained.
Percol has supported Coffee Kids for over 11 years, helping to improve the lives of Latin American coffee farming communities. They have raised over US$380 000 to date which has been used for a wide range health care, education, micro-credit and food security programs.
Children in Africa is Percol's initiative to help improve the lives of children in Africa. The first project is a school building program in Cameroon which will start in December 2010. Percol has raised £11 000 so far for this project.
Set in the Honduras rainforest at 2270m, La Tigra National Park is close to paradise. But for the 100 communities who live in the park, life can be everything but a dream. Simple things like clean drinking water is hard to obtain while poverty is spiralling, fuelled by recent natural disasters. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the world and help is urgently needed.
The Amitigra Foundation is a charity that not only helps conserve the wildlife and natural beauty of La Tigra National Park, it is also taking positive steps to improve the standard of living for the people that live there. The money raised will help finance an ongoing project to bring a continual supply of fresh drinking water to the local communities within the park.
